An oasis where Market Street turns dodgy (especi-ally at night), the Metropolis is eco-friendly yin meets mid-priced yang, with each floor colour-coded in shades of olive green (earth), taupe (wind), yellow (fire) and aquamarine (water). The compact rooms have nicely understated furnishings: one of the suites, specially designed for kids, has bunk beds, a blackboard and toys. Cable TV and better-than-average toiletries complete the comforts. From the tenth floor, where some rooms have balconies, there are splendid views over Potrero Hill to the Oakland hills beyond. Facilities include a small library, tiny workout room (ask for the discounted passes to a nearby gym) and small meditation space. You can expect some street noise at night, but bargain hunters will be happy.
