Seal Rock Inn

San Francisco doesn't really do beach motels, but this 1960s motor lodge comes pretty close. Most of the large and spotless rooms have at least partial ocean views and, at night you can fall asleep to the sound of distant foghorns. Furnishings won't win any awards, but most third-floor rooms have wood-burning fireplaces (in this foggy part of town, these book up early). Family-sized rooms come with a folding vinyl wall for visual privacy; some rooms have kitchenettes, the rest have mini-fridges and microwaves. Seal Rock is next to Sutro Heights Park and has free covered parking, a patio and, for the thick of skin, a heated outdoor pool.
