GLU isn’t your typical side project. Michael Shuman’s solo venture feels more like a late-night experiment gone right, where hip-hop, indie pop and a bit of moody synth all get equal say. If you’ve ever wondered what a Queens of the Stone Age bassist does when he’s left to his own devices, here’s your answer: he channels Gorillaz’s genre-hopping spirit, Mac Miller’s melodic instincts and a touch of Depeche Mode’s shadowy cool. “COLD SWEAT” is the calling card, but the real intrigue is hearing how Shuman stitches together these influences live, in a room that’s intimate enough to catch every detail. Brick and Mortar’s no-frills setup means you’re close to the action, and there’s a sense that anything could happen. If you’re after something unpredictable and genuinely new, this is worth a night out.
