Bay to Breakers 2018: Road closures, Muni and BART schedules + more important info

Plan to leave your car at home this weekend, folks. Bay to Breakers, San Francisco's famous booze-fueled foot race, returns this Sunday, bringing lots and lots of street closures with it. 

The race route begins on Howard Street at Main, looping through numerous neighborhoods as runners make their way to Golden Gate Park and, eventually, to the Pacific.

As a result, these streets will be closed on Sunday: 

  • Howard (from the Embarcadero to Beale)
  • Steuart (from Mission down to the southern end)
  • Spear (from Mission to Folsom)
  • Main (from Mission to Folsom)
  • Beale (from Mission to Folsom)
  • Fremont (from Mission to Folsom)
  • Second Street (from Mission to Folsom)
  • 2nd (from Mission to Folsom)
  • New Montgomery (from Mission to Howard)
  • Howard (from Beale to Third)
  • Howard (from Third Street to Ninth Street)
  • 9th (from Howard to Market)
  • Hayes (from Market to Divisadero)
  • Steiner (from Grove to Hayes)
  • Divisadero (from Grove to Oak)
  • Baker (from Oak to Fell)
  • Fell (from Divisadero to Stanyan)
  • 47th (from Fulton to JFK)
  • La Play (from Cabrillo to Fulton)
  • Fulton (eastbound, from the Great Highway to 48th Avenue)
  • Fulton (westbound, from 46th to the Great Highway)
  • Lincoln (eastbound, from the Great Highway to La Playa)
  • Lincoln (westbound,from 48th to the Great Highway)
  • Cabrillo (from 46th to La Playa)
  • Balboa (from 46th to the Great Highway)
  • Point Lobos (from 48th/El Camino Del Mar to to the Great Highway)
  • JFK (from Stanyan to the Great Highway)
  • Bernice Rodgesr (from JFK to MLK)
  • MLK (from Bernice Rodgers to Lincoln)
  • Transverse (from MLK to Crossover)
  • 30th (from Fulton to JFK)
  • 36th (from Fulton to JFK)
  • Chain of Lakes (from Fulton to Lincoln)
  • MLK (from Chain of Lakes to Sunset)
  • 47th (from Fulton to JFK)
  • Great Highway (from Sloat to JFK)
  • Great Highway (from JFK to Balboa)

A lot of Muni routes will also be changed for the festivities.

Lines and routes that operate parallel to the course

  • The N, 5, 7, 31, 38 and N Owl and will experience crowding and delays.
  • There will be added service to and from the race on the 5X, 5R and NX.
  • There will be added morning N Line Metro service east of 19th Avenue.

Routes that cross the course

  • The 19, 22, 24, 27, 33, 43, and 47 will be divided into 2 sections, with no sevice between sections. You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or take an alternate route.
  • The 8, 10, and 12 will reroute around the course via The Embarcadero. 
  • The 30 and 45 will not serve south of Market. Use the 8, 10, or 12 routes to access SoMa.
  • The 49 will not serve north of Mission and South Van Ness. You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or else take alternate routings, to reach the 47 for Van Ness service.
  • You can cross the park on the 18, 28, 29, or 44 routes. Expect delays due to heavy ridership and traffic.

Routes that normally go to the Ferry Building

  • The 21 will not operate until Hayes street is clear of the race. Use the 5 instead.
  • The 31 will only go to the Temporary Transbay Terminal. The 21 will also reroute over most of its route.

Market and Mission Street routes and lines

  • The Muni Metro Subway will open at 6 a.m.
    • Shuttles will run from West Portal to Embarcadero
    • Regular Muni Metro service will begin at 8 a.m.
  • Some routes on Market and Mission -- 6, 7, 9, 14, 49, K-L-M Owls -- will only go to Market, 10th or 11th Street.

BART

For those planning to take BART into the city, special service trains will begin at 6am, operating at 20-minute intervals until the start of regular Sunday service at 8am. Also, BART stations will open 20 minutes before to the departure of the first Bay to Breakers train from that location.
