The shop premises at 575 Castro Street - which used to belong to Harvey Milk - have recently been restored and now house Given, an art- and design-themed gift boutique. Proprietor Nick Romero commissioned painter John Baden to design a mural to honour Milk, which was complete in September 2007. Fearful of assassination, Milk had recorded audiotapes outlining his political stance and how he wished to be remembered if he met a violent death. In the mural, a pistol is aimed at Milk's head and appears to fire the words of his eerily prescient statement: 'If a bullet should enter my brain, let the bullet destroy every closet door.'
