Urinetown sounds like a joke that should wear thin, but that is exactly where its cleverness comes in. Beneath the deliberately ridiculous premise of a world where toilets are controlled by a corporation is a sharp sendup of greed, bureaucracy and the ways people justify power. This production leans into the musical’s strange balance of broad comedy and pointed social commentary, with big theatrical moments that know exactly how absurd they are. The result is a show that can make you laugh at the same time it nudges you to think about resources, inequality and who gets to make the rules. For anyone who enjoys theater that is willing to get weird while still having something to say, Urinetown’s bizarre little world is far more thoughtful than its title suggests.
