San Francisco's Japantown is lively year-round, but Japan Week gives the neighborhood an extra spark. Centered around Japan Day, the celebration fills the district with taiko drumming, traditional and contemporary dance, martial arts demonstrations, live music, cultural workshops, and hands-on activities that invite visitors to do more than just watch. One moment you might be trying your hand at calligraphy or origami, the next you're watching an energetic awa odori dance performance or browsing local vendors between performances. Rather than feeling like a single festival, Japan Week unfolds as a showcase of the neighborhood itself, highlighting the traditions, creativity, and community that have made Japantown one of San Francisco's cultural landmarks for generations.
