Drawing its name from a line in Herman Hesse's Steppenwolf, the Magic Theatre has impressed locals throughout its 40-year history with stagings of groundbreaking works by the likes of former resident playwright Sam Shepard. The two 150-seat houses, in premises overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, offer an intriguing mix of new works by both emerging playwrights and leading lights. Hosts a lesbian playwright festival every January and showcases queer plays though the year.
