Steve Reich’s Different Trains

Penumbra String Quartet, a Berkeley-based ensemble, performs Steve Reich’s Grammy-winning "Different Trains,"a three-movement piece for strings and recorded tape. Reich wrote it as a meditation on the trains that transported Jews to concentration camps across Europe.

Performed in conjunction with Trimpin's "Pour Crever."

Alia McKean (violin) is a UC Berkeley graduate currently pursuing a Masters of Public Health at UC Davis. She was principal second violinist of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, and enjoys exploring eclectic chamber repertoire.

Jane Kim (violin) is Music Director of the UC Berkeley Chamber Orchestra and Summer Symphony. She also serves as principal violist of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra and organist for the Shepherd of the Hills Church in Berkeley.

Cindy Wang (viola) is currently a PhD student in Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley, as well as an active musician, photographer, and graphic designer in the Bay Area. She is a graduate of Harvard College.

Mosa Tsay (cello) is an active performer and private cello teacher in Berkeley and San Jose. She is principal cellist of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, and a founding member of Celli@Berkeley. She graduated from UC Berkeley with degrees in Music and Society and Environment.

Daniel Cullen (sound/mixing) is a composer and teacher based in Berkeley. Since earning his Ph.D in Music at UC Berkeley, Daniel has taught at the University of San Francisco, The California Jazz Conservatory and The Crowden School. He is director of the Electrified Sound Collective, a group of students exploring collaborative composition and improvisation using audio technology.
