Varlen Pen was born in Korea in 1916 but lived and worked in Russia. He taught at the prestigious Repin Academy of Art and was even invited to North Korea, where he stayed for a year and a half. (He was invited to stay permanently but he declined.) At this exhibit, you can see Varlen Pen’s portraits of influential figures in Russian contemporary history, such as the writer Boris Pasternak.
