What’s listed as one of the seven wonders of winter alongside the Northern Lights of Canada by Lonely Planet? Korea’s ice festivals, of course. And amongst them, the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival reigns supreme. Sancheoneo is Korean for mountain trout and here, not only can you catch them (either patiently by line and hook or more actively, with your bare hands) but you can also cook them and participate in a variety of other ice-related activities. Those not so seafood-inclined may instead go ATV riding, take a sleigh ride or just go for a winter stroll and look at the ice sculptures that have been especially set up for the occasion. Interested in fishing but don’t know where to start? There are English-speaking volunteers to help guide first-timers.
