Rory Petzer brings sporting gees to Time Out South Africa

Just in time before the transfer window shuts, Time Out has a new signing to announce.

Rory Petzer is joining Time Out South Africa as our latest Culture Connector, covering all things sport.

As Time Out expands across South Africa, it is partnering with local storytellers who know their cities and communities best. These collaborations bring South African perspectives to the global platform, helping audiences discover the people, places and experiences shaping local culture – and giving them more reasons to get out and explore.

And with four Comrades Marathon finishes to his name, we’re fairly confident Rory will pass the fitness test.  If you’ve ever found yourself laughing at your phone while a man in the front seat of his car makes a painfully accurate observation about life in South Africa, there’s a good chance you already know Rory.

His viral videos have made everyday Mzansi life his comedy playground, with sport providing plenty of material. There’s a lot of heart behind the punchlines, too: this is someone who shares the joy, nerves and occasional disbelief that come with being a South African supporter!

KwaZulu-Natal audiences will also know him through his work at East Coast Radio. Beyond the studio and the driver’s seat, his CV includes sold-out comedy shows, MC gigs and a humour column, alongside multiple Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards and a DStv Content Creator Award.

Then there’s the running. Finishing Comrades once earns you serious respect around here. Four times? That’s commitment well beyond setting an alarm for kick-off.

For Durban, where a weekend can revolve around Kings Park or an early-morning training run, that mix of sporting passion and humour feels right at home. Rory will bring it to Time Out through his own take on the games, personalities and moments that get South Africans talking.

He joins a growing team of local voices, including fellow Culture Connector Nick Hamman, helping us tell our cities’ stories through the people who know and love them.

First up, rugby. Rory’s upcoming column arrives on Thursday, September 3, tackling the third Test in Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, ahead of the Springboks’ clash with the All Blacks at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday, September 5.
