Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center says
The Pet Resource Center will hold Tampa Bay's first-ever Check the Chip Day on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the facility at 440 N. Falkenburg Road in Tampa.

Check the Chip Day aims to educate pet owners about the benefits of microchips in order to reunite lost pets with owners and steer clear of crowded shelters. Technicians can verify that a microchip is functioning properly, show pet owners how to register a chip they were previously unaware existed in the pet, or implant a new microchip.

Here are details about Check the Chip Day at the Pet Resource Center:

Pets can be scanned for a microchip free of charge at the shelter.
Pets in need of a microchip can have one implanted for just $5 *while supplies last.
Proof of current rabies vaccination is required of pets receiving a microchip.
$5 per pet rabies shots will be available for animals seeking a microchip.
Staff and volunteers will be on hand to explain how microchips work, how to check on your pet's chip registration, and how to update contact information if needed.
Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers to receive services.
Check the Chip Day will take place rain or shine.
Check the Chip Day is an initiative by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), presented in partnership with community volunteers and the Hillsborough County Veterinary Technicians Club.
