New Parish Institute Lecture Series The Christian Base Community says
The NPI’s next session is Sunday, September 25, 4:00 pm at Faith Lutheran Church. Bishop Chuck Leigh will address:
The Christian base community movement in the global south.

Most Christians today live in the southern hemisphere. Christian-ity is growing in Africa, Latin American and even Asia. Perhaps their Christian practice has something ours does not.

As a young man, chuck leigh went to central America to minister to the poor. Instead he was ministered to by the poor. Bishop Leigh does not consider himself an expert on base communities. But he knows what he saw. He will share his reflections on and experiences in Central American base communities.

Created in both rural and urban areas, the Christian Base Community, organized illiterate peasants and workers into self-reliant worshiping communities through the tutelage of a priest or local lay member. These "base communities" were often the only church option for people in rural areas or those for whom a "local" church may be miles away. (Adapted from https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_base_communities.)

Bishop Chuck Leigh is retired from the Communion of Synodal
Catholic Churches. He recently served as pastor of Christ the Servant Catholic Church on Nebraska Avenue, which closed following an unexpected fire. Bishop Leigh and members of Christ the Servant have been worshiping at Faith and St. Paul since the fire earlier this year. The Synodal Catholic Churches are part of the independent Catholic movement that arose in Europe in rejection of the doctrine of papal infallibility established by Vatican I in 1870.
