This terrific series of podcasts from US radio station KCRW aims to bring you ‘the greatest music stories never told’. The net is cast pretty wide and each season comes with a theme, though there’s a heavy focus on the ‘80s and the heyday of independent and alternative music. From season to season the tone, host and even intent of the show varies; the excellent 2021 series Bent By Nature is loosely centred on influential underground LA DJ Deirdre O’Donoghue, and features a bonanza of big-name guests including Michael Stipe and Henry Rollins.
True music lovers don’t just want to listen to music. They want band t-shirts. They want a record collection. They want music content coming into their ears at all times of day (and probably while they sleep too). And the best thing for it? Music podcasts. You heard us. The absolute best of both worlds. Music podcasts range from general chit-chat to in-depth musical history, and all of them come with a brilliant set of tunes.
And for those saying, ‘Why not just listen to the radio?’, all we can say is give it a go. Music podcasts don’t just play great soundtracks. They delve into music history and take deep dives, so you can explore the deepest details of The Beatles’ rise to fame, or learn everything there is to know about the musical ‘Hamilton’. So whether you’re a musical theatre nerd or you exclusively pump house music, get a music podcast in your ears for your train journey, morning jog or hefty road trip. Permission to live and breathe music has been granted. Enjoy.
