Danny Krivit, François K and Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell have acquired the aura of elder statesmen on the New York club scene – hardly surprising when you consider that the former two have been rocking the Big Apple's dancefloors since the 1970s.
The trio started their Body & Soul parties in 1996, holding them on Sunday afternoons at the now-defunct Vinyl club in Lower Manhattan. They described the event as 'like a house party that got too big for someone's living room', although you'd have struggled to find a house party that drew such a wide-ranging crowd.

While it's no longer a regular concern, Body & Soul still rears its head from time to time, not least in the form of its annual outdoor parties in Tokyo. Already 15 years in the running, Body & Soul Live in Japan remains a strictly daytime-only event, but one with superior visuals and sound mixing: in addition to New York lighting supremo Ariel, the tech side of things is handled by semi-legendary sound engineer Yasushi Asada, who has been in the business for nearly three decades now.
But the true magic of the party is provided by the NYC trio of DJs, who play back-to-back through the entire event. While classic house is obviously a major ingredient at every Body & Soul, spice is provided in the form of pounding techno and deep bass tunes.
The three musketeers usually never release their setlists – they like to keep the audience on its toes, as it were – but have made a partial exception in our case. See below for last year's complete tune lineup, which is sure to give you an idea of things to come on June 4.
And if you're planning on a groovy Sunday out with the whole family, know that Body & Soul's Odaiba venue – right by Aomi Station on the Yurikamome – also features a kids' zone, complete with food and drink stalls, eyeglass-making workshops, miniature bicycle races, a pop-up library and even a party room for the next generation of clubbers.
To sum up, Body & Soul is much more than your average open-air beat bash: it's a laidback urban festival that offers something for partiers of all ages, and an electronic music extravaganza enjoyable for both hardcore audio geeks and those who just want to shake some booty in the sun.
