The Olympic Stadium saga continues: two new proposals unveiled

The entire city, if not the entire country, seems to be prepping for 2020 in its own way, but the official planning team for the Tokyo Olympics has definitely had a serious case of bad juju. With the official logo being hit by plagiarism claims and Zaha Hadid’s stadium deemed either too futuristic (it was likened to a turtle wishing to swim away) or too expensive by officials (although Zaha Hadid Architects disputed this). In an apparent effort to be a bit more transparent, the Japan Sport Council has now finally unveiled not just one, but two proposals for the new stadium, both of which cost under the ¥155 million limit set out by the JSC (for now…).

The companies behind them have been kept under wraps, but both are allegedly Japanese, with whispers about involvement of some of the five super contractors in either design. Both designs incorporate a lot of wood, emanating the green environs of Yoyogi. The final decision is supposed to be made by the end of the year, with further feasibility checks and screenings planned before this. They’ve even been so kind as to add a small questionnaire for the public this time (Japanese only). We haven’t made up our mind yet which one we like better, but are mostly curious how they’ll pull off the very tight building schedule…
