The wait is finally over. The much-anticipated reopening of teamLab Borderless is now open in the lower echelons of the newly constructed Azabudai Hills complex. This relocation is more than just a change of address and represents a significant new chapter in teamLab's journey, including by making the museum more accessible to those in central Tokyo.

The teamLab Borderless experience distinguishes itself from the linear art journey of teamLab Planets by offering a mapless, unguided exploration of digital art installations. You can wander, return and delve into immersive pieces that change over time, revealing new views with each visit. Artworks familiar to those who visited the Odaiba site now carry subtle enhancements thanks to advanced technology, so you can expect an improved, richer experience from your favourite teamLab installations.

Here’s what it’s like to set foot into the revamped, centrally located museum, along with a few highlights.

There is no specific order in which to view the artworks in the teamLab Borderless museum. You are encouraged to lose and find yourself in the ever-shifting tapestry of digital art. However, one of the first scenes you’re likely to come across is the flow of a digital waterfall cascading over a boulder.

As you navigate the space, light gathers and dances around your feet. Projections of white crows glide across the walls all around you, weaving through traditional kanji characters that descend from the ceiling. This interplay of imagery and interaction offers a preview of the museum's thematic characteristics and immersiveness.

Infinite Crystal World

Hundreds of strings of LED lights are hung from the ceiling of this mirrored infinity room, creating the illusion of a crystal universe that extends infinitely in all directions.

The presence and movements of visitors shape the light patterns, thus personalising each encounter. This installation alters perceptions of space and light, wrapping you in a kaleidoscopic realm that goes beyond physical limits.

Bubble Universe

This fantastical space is filled with hundreds of reflective bubbles that hang from the ceiling in a mirrored room, creating an infinite world of softly glowing lights. Visitors find themselves enveloped in a universe of reflective bubbles, creating a constantly shifting landscape of light and reflection.

Light Sculpture Series

The scope of this single space, where teamLab presents its extensive ‘Light Sculpture’ series, is astounding. Here, moving lights fitted on the floor, walls and ceilings emit multi-coloured beams that intersect with each other to create a three-dimensional effect.

teamLab has finalised 15 ‘light sculptures’ for this series so far, including the dynamic red ‘Birth’ piece and ‘Light Vortex’, which will make you feel like you’re being swallowed by a cosmic vacuum. This extensive curation is expected to expand even further in the near future.

Microcosmoses - Wobbling Light

In this prismatic mirrored room, dozens of reflective spheres roll along a winding track at different speeds, like dewdrops sliding down blades of grass. The spheres appear to react to each other and sporadically light up when they move through a space. The lights from the centre of each sphere can emit 43 different colours, but do so in a way that makes it difficult to identify one specific hue as the light bounces throughout the reflected surfaces in the room.

In this room, you'll encounter a digital landscape where megalithic structures are adorned with blooming digital flowers, and they are responsive to human presence. The installation transitions between different artistic expressions, from vibrant floral patterns to the serene ebb and flow of digital waves.

Sketch Ocean

A common feature of teamLab exhibitions worldwide, this interactive installation allows you to design your own sea creatures and watch them come to life in a vast digital aquarium. The artwork combines creativity with technology, creating a dynamic ecosystem where every drawing contributes to the diversity of the digital sea. It's an enchanting experience that bridges art, imagination and environmental awareness, making it a favourite especially among kids and young adults.

Challenging the concept of physical boundaries, this installation presents an interactive space where the notion of a 'wall' is both questioned and redefined. Through digital technology, barriers become permeable, and you're invited to explore the spaces between the physical and immaterial worlds.

Inspired by the Japanese Zen Buddhist saying 'every step is a place to learn,' this meditative piece depicts an array of mystical creatures and townsfolk embarking on an endless voyage to unknown destinations. In this digital landscape, paths diverge and converge, mimicking the unpredictable journey of life.

EN Teahouse

A reimagining of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony through a digital lens, the EN Teahouse serves as an installation room as well as a tranquil space to rest and enjoy a cup of tea in the middle of your tour. When you order your tea, a digital flower will bloom in the middle of your cup, with the petals scattering when you wave your hand over it.

teamLab Borderless is finally open at its new location in Azabudai Hills on February 9. Tickets for February through mid-April are now available online
