Japan has the most number of KitKat flavours in the world – and they are innovative flavours too, such as wasabi, sake and the likes, which are exclusive to the country. The latest flavour, named Sublime Ruby, is the first confectionery to be made from the new Ruby chocolate developed by renowned Swiss chocolatier Barry Callebaut in September last year. This is an entirely new chocolate flavour, in addition to the existing dark, milk and white chocolate that we are familiar with.

The Ruby chocolate is made from the Ruby cocoa. Its pinkish hue and fruity-berry taste are all natural, without any additional colours and flavours. This new KitKat is created under the direction and supervision of top patissier Yasumasa Takagi, and is available for purchase at KitKat Chocolatory stores in Japan and online – just in time for Valentine’s Day. But let us warn you that the queues are long for this and it sells out fast. During our visit to a Chocolatory in Shinjuku yesterday, the Sublime Ruby KitKat was sold out by 11am.

KitKat is arguably the most famous chocolate in Japan. The brand's many country-exclusive flavours have also made it a popular souvenir item for tourists. One of the main reasons for its success in Japan is due to the name which sounds similar to the Japanese phrase ‘kito katsu’, which means ‘sure to win’. As such, the chocolate is often given as gifts to students taking exams as a good luck wish.

Prices start from ¥300 (for a single bar). For more information about this new KitKat Chocolatory Sublime Ruby, click here.
