Stuffed animals are for everyone now. Studies have found that well over a third of grown-ups in Western countries sleep with a plushie, and the ‘kidult’ market accounts for a hefty and growing share of the global toy industry’s revenue. But the rest of the world still has a lot of catching up to do to equal Japan’s cuddly toy culture. In this country, the ubiquitous plushies are (almost) people – at least judging by the spectrum of services geared towards soft toys. Here are some of the more inventive offerings.

Plenty of people get tattoos of their favourite plushies, but the Stuffed Memories project reverses the roles by offering body art for soft toys. Its expert embroiderers create designs expressing the bond between owner and companion – a thoughtful undertaking that’s been featured at Dutch Design Week 2025 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and through an exhibition at Tokyo bookstore and gallery Tiger Mountain. The project isn’t currently taking new orders, but a gallery of past works can be viewed online.

Are your beloved plushies looking a little the worse for wear? Send them to Netto de Sentaku for a much-deserved pampering. The specialised stuffed-toy cleaning shop is staffed by expert artisans who carefully hand-wash each item one by one and also handle repairs like reattaching fabric and mending frayed edges. Their impeccable craftsmanship has resulted in a steady stream of orders from all over the world.

Omochi Travel takes your stuffed animal on a trip on your behalf. Whether it’s a visit to a traditional sake brewery in Iwate or a sightseeing spree around famous Kyoto landmarks with a stay at a traditional ryokan inn, the agency’s tours allow plushie participants to enjoy a proper holiday. Updates from the trip are shared in real time, letting you live vicariously through your fluffy friend.

Business hotel chain Toyoko Inn has a special accommodation option for guests with plushies in tow. For an additional fee of ¥300 paid upon booking, you get to stay in a room equipped with a tiny bed designed specifically for stuffed animals. The plan even includes a mini-sized version of Toyoko Inn’s signature striped sleepwear, so you and your cuddly companion can chill in matching pyjamas.
