Time Out says

Bid farewell to 2023 at this spectacular light show in Shinjuku featuring hundreds of lanterns, projection mapping visual effects, appearances by singer-songwriter Piko Taro (yes, the ‘Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen’ guy) and some of your favourite Sanrio characters including Hello Kitty.

The countdown takes place a bit earlier than midnight, so it’s ideal for those who don't want to stay out too late. One of the most visually stunning highlights of the event will be the release of hundreds of lanterns into the sky at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building’s Civic Plaza. Each lantern contains a wish for the 2024 new year.

While application for the lantern release is now closed, you can still enjoy the spectacle from viewing areas that do not require advance reservation.
