A week in a cabin overlooking the Pacific, with time to make music and very little reason to check your phone. ‘Pearson’ brings a little of that pace to Yoyogi-Hachiman.
Premiering at Vacant/Centre, the video installation follows Japanese-Canadian singer-songwriter Jonah Yano during a residency on Vancouver Island. Conceived by creative director Mikey Krzyzanowski and his London studio open!, the project gave Yano space to work away from his usual routine, with musicians Noah Williamson and Monsune joining him along the way.
Director Francis Plummer and cinematographer Robbie Corral documented the stay, capturing the atmosphere around the sessions as well as early sounds from Yano’s forthcoming album. The setting – a forest cabin found by Stüssy art director Brock MacKay – becomes part of the work’s unhurried rhythm.
Made to be encountered in a gallery rather than squeezed between things on a feed, the film plays on a continuous loop. Visitors can sit down, stay a while and have complimentary herbal tea blended by Scenzi Herbal Tea. There’s no need to arrive for the beginning.
