This year, our curator Chelsea Shanoff is in charge of three out of four editions of Emergents. The series kicks off on a dark note.

Wapiti and Völur will take you through a labyrinth of hypnotic sounds, traveling from experimental violin riffs to soaring chants, and back again.

Wapiti, a Montreal-based piano and violin duo, are known for their innovative programs exploring experimental and contemporary music. Wapiti is Geneviève Liboiron, violin, and Daniel Áñez, piano. Hailing from both Canada and Colombia, respectively, the duo explore ideas of stillness in performing works by Bolivian, Argentinian, American, and German composers. Included on the program will be a work by Morton Feldman, and a world premiere by German composer Nicolaus Huber, written for Wapiti.

Drawing from folk melodies, heathen spirituality and trance-inducing doom, Völur weaves a hypnotic web of chthonic noise on the yawning gap of silence. A deep sound slowly moves through melodies, riffs and timbres as a seeress chants for souls long past. Völur is Lucas Gadke (Blood Ceremony) on bass and voice, Laura C. Bates on violin and voice, and Jimmy P Lightning (Do Make Say Think) on drums. Be prepared for the Music Gallery to be transformed into an otherworldly place.

The Emergents series is generously supported by Roger D. Moore.
