Gladstone Hotel Art Hut: Call For Submissions says
Seize the moment! Seize the space!

Queen Street West, you’ve changed. The Gladstone Hotel is embracing this ongoing change with an innovative project that will transform a temporarily empty property across the street into an art gallery and incubator for up-and-coming Toronto artists. The project hopes to spark conversations about the history while imagining the future of this site and others like it in our city—imbued with largely forgotten memories and on the cusp of transformation.

Through this project, the Gladstone Hotel invites artists, collectives and organizations to explore how urban spaces are claimed and re-claimed and examine themes of temporality and transience. What do we imagine and hope will happen here in future and how do we build community in a post-gentrified neighbourhood?

We want to give space (literally!) to support projects that:
- Expand our community of artists
- Explore diverse perspectives
- Spark conversations
- Are fun and provocative!

The Gladstone Hotel Art Hut is a six month pop-up project initiative to animate the currently empty property at 1181 Queen Street West (directly across the street from the hotel) with artistic programming including exhibitions, installations, artist residencies and mini art markets.

The Art Hut will officially activate for Halloween 2016 and will continue with six months of programming.

Deadline to submit is November 18, 2016

We are currently seeking individual artists, collectives and arts organizations via invitation and open call. If your practice investigates tensions surrounding gentrification, claiming or reclaiming place, temporality, urban redevelopment, community building, condo life and vertical communities etc. you can get involved in one of three ways:

Installations – two week durations
We are seeking site specific activations for the interior of the Art Hut. The space can function as a vitrine/window gallery or be open to the public with negotiated gallery hours (provided that participating artists sit the space). Activations can function independently or can align with cultural events in the city and/or the Gladstone’s signature exhibitions (Come Up To My Room and Grow Op). The Art Hut space will support video projects, performance, photography, visual art, light or sculptural installations.

Artist Residencies – two week durations
We invite artists, collectives or organizations whose practices or activities are aligned with the Art Hut Mission to take over the Art Hut as a work space. You are not expected to produce something by the end of the residency. Instead, we hope to attract artists interested in sparking conversations that align with the Art Hut’s mission through your work, social media presence and simply by activating the space when you create in it.

Deadline to submit is November 18, 2016.
