At first glance, Laurianne Simon’s paintings could simply be a form of postmodern abstract expressionism. Yet still waters run deep.

With titles such as “La rage des moineaux” (Fury of the Sparrows), “Message des formes” (The Message of Forms), and “Mon rêve de liberté” (Dreaming of Freedom), it is clear that there is another level. Colour is an emotional experience; it has a psychological dimension, one in which even a bird’s wing can become a resounding personal exploration into the pursuit of freedom.

Born and raised in Brest, France, Laurianne Simon lived in Montreal before moving to Toronto three years ago. Her MFA in Visual Arts from the École Européenne Supérieure d’Art de Bretagne in Quimper included a year of study at UQAM in Montreal in 2010 – 2011. She is delighted to present here a sampling of the paintings she has made out of her studio / apartment in the West End.
