Yuletide Revels
A Victorian vocal recital at Campbell House Museum
December 13, 2 pm (door opens at 1:30 pm)

Campbell House, the elegant mansion on the northwest corner of Queen Street and University Avenue, launch Campbell House Musicales - a new concert series dedicated to the vocal music of the Victorian era. Robert Missen, Artistic Director and Co-Producer of the series along with Liz Driver, Director/Curator of Campbell House, will present some of Toronto's finest singers and pianists in recitals that showcase the glorious music of leading 19th-century composers from around the world. Luminaries such as Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Faure and Stephen Foster will share the stage with Canadian and Toronto composers of the period.

The first concert, "Yuletide Revels," will feature soprano Allison Arends, baritone Michael York and pianist Wayne Strongman. Robert Missen will serve as host.

In addition to Christmas works by Wolf and Cornelius, the audience will be treated to sacred and secular songs of the season, as well as some interesting surprises. Everyone will be encouraged to sing along to a number of Victorian carols. The concert with conclude with a special reading of "A Visit from St. Nicholas", better known today as "'Twas the Night before Christmas", which was written shortly after the building of Campbell House in 1822.

Musicales were popular events in Victorian times. They were presented in ballrooms and salons of houses like the Campbells'. So, we are returning this wonderful music to its roots. Audiences will be wafted back in time to experience the mirth, merriment, sentiment and good cheer of another age. Special seasonal refreshments will be served.

The concert will be of 75 minutes duration without intermission. Tickets are $25 and are available from Campbell House. Seating is limited to 55, so order your tickets soon!
