There’s been quite a bit of turbulence in the world of airlines over the past few years. High fuel costs, growing environmental concerns, and the long aftermath of the pandemic have left the industry in a state of flux, with massive names like Thomas Cook Airlines and Flybe going bust. Now, a brand new airline is set to launch in the UK next summer, offering holidaymakers more choice for their next adventure.
European aviation giant the Lufthansa Group is setting its sights on UK airspace with its offshoot Discover Airlines. It’ll offer three new routes, all of which offer connections between the UK and Germany.
From March 29 next year, you’ll be able to fly direct between Glasgow and Frankfurt, six times a week. From May 16 next year, there’ll also be the option to go straight from Glasgow to Munich and back, twice a week. Then on May 17, there’ll be a new route between Bristol and Frankfurt, also twice a week. Finally, on June 19, you’ll be able to fly straight from Inverness to Frankfurt, once a week.
These routes will open up Germany to British tourists searching for nature, history and new experiences. Munich is the gateway to Bavaria, famed for its fairytale castles, deep dark forests, enticing beer gardens, and crystal-clear lakes. Frankfurt is more about business than pleasure, but these routes will be handy for the 18,000 Scots working for German companies, and their overseas colleagues. Germany is one of the biggest sources of inward investment in Scotland, with the two countries collaborating closely in industries including renewable energy and space technology.
So what’s it like, flying with Discover Airlines? Can we expect fabled German efficiency? Reports on Trustpilot aren’t especially positive, with an average rating of 1.9 from over a thousand reviews. But budget airlines rarely please all customers (Ryanair’s Trustpilot score is a still more woeful 1.3) and this new entrant to the UK market should be an exciting prospect for anyone looking to jet into the heart of Germany.
