The UK high street isn’t doing so well at the mo (you can see a full list of high-street closures here). It’s brutal out there – soon, only the hardiest will be left; the toughest of brands, those who’ve proven essential through pandemics and recessions. And budget supermarket chain Lidl is certainly one of those ultra-tough brands.

Lidl has revealed plans to open 12 new stores across the UK, with the chain asking investors to give it £91 million to help do so. It’s worth noting that these stores aren’t confirmed (like the Lidl confirmed to be opening soon in south London), just potential new locations.

If Lidl gets all that money from investors, here’s the full list of places that are set to get new budget supermarkets.

  • Alexandria
  • Birmingham
  • Bovey Tracey
  • Bristol
  • Crediton
  • Downham Market
  • Hull
  • Manchester
  • Northampton
  • Reading
  • Redcar
  • Saffron Walden

Which sure looks like a lot of new Lidls – but those 12 locations don’t compare to competitor Aldi, which is looking to open 500 stores in the coming year or so. The battle for best affordable supermarket rages on.

More brands persevering on the high street

Lidl and Aldi certainly aren’t the only brands aiming to massively increase their UK presence in the coming months and years. At Time Out we recently covered that B&M intends on opening 125 new stores, Greggs wants 160 new outlets and Primark has five new shops in its sights

Did you see that locals have just lost their battle to stop the controversial Stonehenge tunnel?

Plus: Britain’s rainiest seaside towns have been revealed.
