It doesn’t matter where you are in the UK, a good pub will never be far away. There’s estimated to be more than 45,000 boozers across the country: places where people have been going for chilled pints, for community get togethers and for rowdy revelries for centuries. And at Time Out, we can’t get enough of them – we just crowned our top 22 pubs in the UK right now.
Time Out’s guide to Britain’s greatest places to drink includes a load of city pubs as well as a bunch of boozers off the beaten track – on beaches, beneath cliffs and overlooking lakes. Now, to go with that guide, we’ve created a handy map so you can see exactly which of the UK’s best pubs are on your doorstep.
Here’s the breakdown.
Scotland and Lake District
Glasgow boasts the most top pubs on our list with the Doublet in third place, the Laurieston Bar in eighth and the Rose Reilly at number 17. In Edinburgh we included Brass Monkey on Drummond Street at number 19 and the Dagda Bar in Newington at 21.
Across the border and down into the Lake District, there are two pubs that made the cut. The Old Dungeon Ghyll landed in fourth place for its ‘eye-wateringly picturesque beer garden’ and ‘boisterous music nights’ while the Travellers Rest in Glenridding placed 13th for its views over Ullswater, its hearty fish and chips and its selection of Cumbrian ales.
The North and Midlands: Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Birmingham and more
The number one place on our pub ranking hails from Manchester. The Peveril of the Peak took the top spot for being a ‘proper pub and then some’, with a jukebox, pool table and dartboard, vintage stools and sticky tables. The Grade II-listed Marble Arch Inn in Manchester also made it onto the list.
Elsewhere in the north, the Golden Lion in Todmorden, which our food editor described as ‘a year-round equivalent to one of Glastonbury Festival’s more unhinged tents’, took fifth place. The Roscoe Head in Liverpool placed 10th.
Birmingham and Sheffield are both home to two of Time Out’s top pubs. In the former you’ll find the Old Crown, which came sixth in the ranking, and the Hare and Hounds, which ranked ninth (and also features in our guide to the UK’s finest indie music venues). In Sheff, the ‘low-key but excellent’ Rutland Arms came seventh and Kelham Island Tavern placed 12th.
The South
Finally, seven pubs in the south of the UK featured in the guide. The top-ranked among them was the Old Neptune in Whitstable, which scooped up second prize. Then it was the Grampus Inn in the teeny Devon village of Lee Bay, which placed 11th for being a ‘friendly community hub’. The Old Nun’s Head in London was the only pub from the capital to make the cut (we have a whole other list dedicated to the Big Smoke’s best boozers), coming in at number 14.
The Britannia Inn, a flat-roof pub in Dungeness, was 16th, the Basketmakers Arms in Brighton came 18th, the Watering Hole in Perranporth, Cornwall placed 20th and the Flute and Tankard in Cardiff completed the ranking in 22nd.
