While, sure, it might not feel like veganism is quite as trendy as it was a few years ago, it’s still pretty popular. Veganuary 2023 was attempted by more than 700,000 Brits (according to the official website) – and while not so many as that are vegan full-time, going animal product-free is a pretty normalised dietary choice in the UK.

But which places around the country are most vegan-friendly? To find out, rail company LNER analysed Google search data, HappyCow restaurant listings and Deliveroo vegan takeaway options in Britain’s biggest 20 cities and gave each place a score out of 100.

Top of the pile came Brighton, which isn’t such a huge surprise. The Sussex coastal city is a hub for green and progressive politics, and it boasted both the most vegan restaurants and takeaways per 100,000 people of any UK city. Brighton had a score of 86.9, putting it way ahead of every other city in the study.

In distant second came Manchester, which had a score of 64.9 and has seen particularly strong growth in veganism since 2021, followed by Bristol, which scored 59.9 out of 100. In dead last came Stoke-on-Trent, with a measly score of 5.2.

These are the top ten most vegan-friendly cities in the UK, according to LNER.

  1. Brighton
  2. Manchester
  3. Bristol
  4. Edinburgh
  5. London
  6. Glasgow
  7. York
  8. Liverpool
  9. Cardiff
  10. Reading
