From nano roasteries to gigs at the working men’s club, there’s more to this student area than you’d think

A Sheffield suburb with a nano coffee roastery, a micropub and a working men’s club that doubles as one of the city’s best gig venues has been named one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the UK. Crookes, in the west of the city, comes in at number six on Time Out’s 2026 list.
Time Out asked its regional contributors, who know their cities inside out, to pick the coolest places in Britain right now, from neighbourhoods with booming food scenes and thriving indie businesses to those with a real sense of community. Glasgow’s Govanhill topped the list, followed by Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter and London’s Newington Green, with Crookes landing just behind Leith Walk in Edinburgh.
So why Crookes? For years it was seen purely as a place for students, but it has since grown to become a self-contained neighbourhood which is now a go-to for eating and drinking. Time Out contributor Daniel Dylan Wray describes it as ‘an under-the-radar residential area’ that ‘packs a lot of punch for its size’.
Just outside Crookes is Weston Park, where the museum and gallery are free to visit, and a short walk up the road is TA, a nano coffee roastery, cafe and deli that’s the place for breakfast. From there, you can buy a book or curl up with one at Proof.
Lunch options range from Copenhagen-inspired veggie dishes at Pom to pizza at Paesani, Sicilian deli goods at Made in Sicily and a classic pub lunch at The Punch Bowl. For something sweet, there’s artisan bakery Crumb and Portuguese pastry specialist Lisboa.
Nearby Bole Hills has sweeping views of the city and the Peak District, and in the evening there’s micropub Two Sheds and neighbourhood wine bar Tenaya for a drink. Wray rates No Name as one of Sheffield’s best restaurants, and music fans should keep an eye on Crookes Social Club, a working men’s club that has become one of the best gig venues in the city.
If you’re planning a trip, June is a good shout. That’s when Sheffield Wine Week brings an outdoor wine festival to Bole Hills.
