Whether embarking on the most scenic train rides in America, prepping for one of the best trips to take alone or sitting at home getting ready for fall, these books will accompany you through your September journeys in exciting ways. Happy reading, folks!

Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward

Set in Mississippi, the novel follows 13-year-old Jojo as he joins his little sister Kayla and their addict mother Leonie on a road trip to pick up their father from the Mississippi State Penitentiary. Exploring racism, addiction and family life, this is one of the most anticipated books of the fall, written by National Book Award-winning author Ward.

The Golden House by Salman Rushdie

Rushdie's 12th novel focuses on the immigrant experience by catapulting readers into the life of the Golden family, recent New York City transplants, during Barack Obama's election all throughout the presidency of an unnamed "Joker." Fun fact: The author penned the ending before Donald Trump was elected president.

Afterglow (A Dog Memoir) by Eileen Myles (drops September 12)

The poet writes a memoir about the life (and eventual death) of her pit bull of 16 years, Rosie. An unconventional work for an unconventional author, the book joins an array of others focusing on authors' relationships with their treasured furry friends (John Steinbeck's Travels with Charley should be on your must-read list).

What Happened by Hillary Clinton (drops September 12)

Required reading for all Americans, this is Clinton's first-hand account of how she came to lose the, arguably, most polarizing presidential election in this country's history.

Forest Dark by Nicole Krauss (drops September 12)

In this new work by Krauss, a young novelist and an older lawyer from New York find themselves in an Israeli desert for different reasons. The author explores life in Israel, spirituality and much more.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng (drops September 12)

The author of the best-selling novel Everything I Never Told You, her first, Ng tells yet another story set in a small community. In the late '90s in Shaker Heights, a small suburb in Ohio, an artist single mother and her teen daughter move in and refuse to abide by the town's tacit rules.

The Origin of Others by Toni Morrison (drops September 18)

One of the most celebrated authors in American literature, Morrison draws on her Norton Lectures to think deeply about the concept of "the other." Reflecting on race, history, fear and literature, this is a must-read for both devoted Morrison fans and newbies.

Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King and Owen King (drops September 26)

Master thriller writer Stephen King teams up with his son Owen and pens a world in which women are afflicted by a sleeping disease that turns them into violent beings. Eve Black, the novel's main charcater, is the only one seemingly immune from the malady.
