According to Zagat, Washington, DC is the hottest American food city of 2016. Say what?

Compiling the picks based on the "number of exciting new openings, award recognition and national media attention" that cities have received throughout the year, the dining guide just released the annual list of the 26 hottest food cities, with DC earning the top spot thanks, in part, to restaurants like Bad Saint, Tail Up Goat and The Dabney.

With Los Angeles and Denver earning the second and third spots, respectively, the list encompasses picks from all parts of the country.

Other pleasantly surprising entries include Savannah at number 12 (Florence, The Grey, Cotton & Rue, Rocks on the River), Detroit at number 13 (Mabel Gray, Katoi, Grey Ghost Detroit, The Peterboro) and Raleigh at number 19 (Death & Taxes, Crawford and Son, La Barm Bakery).
