The best new movies on Netflix in June

Netflix brings home some of Oscar’s most honored movies, along with a trove of quality documentaries

Jurassic Park (1993)

Chances are, when June hits, you’re not going to want to be indoors streaming movies. We get that—but so does Netflix. That’s why they’re upping the ante: This month, the streaming service supplies some of the worthiest Oscar winners in recent decades, including this year’s Best Picture, Spotlight. You could also have a summer blockbuster party on your couch and fire up Jurassic Park, Steven Spielberg’s now-classic 1993 original and one of the best summer movies of all time. Accept no substitutes. Check out these five best new movies on Netflix.

Palio (2015)

Imagine a horse race that’s part Kentucky Derby and part Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and you’ll have a good idea what Italy’s Palio di Siena is all about. Director Cosima Spender’s handsome and mirthfully hilarious doc unpacks Siena’s most treasured biannual blood sport, bridging the gap between the Palio’s 17th-century origins and the colorful, merciless personalities who keep it alive today.

Jurassic Park (1993)

Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur epic is a work of clockwork precision, the last of his “perfect” movies (along with the same year’s Schindler’s List) before a move into more idiosyncratic and personal territory. Spotlight (2015)

Bring on all the comparisons to All the President’s Men you can muster. This quietly shocking journalism thriller—about The Boston Globe’s real-life exposure of child abuse in the local Catholic archdiocese—earns them and more. Still, it’s an achievement like nothing else, an ensemble film that subtly stresses the interconnectedness of coworkers and citizens to the higher cause of truth-telling.

Janis: Little Girl Blue (2015)

Amy Berg’s deeply sympathetic documentary on Janis Joplin—a singer whose shredded wail tapped reservoirs of pain—gets so much right, it feels like a major act of cultural excavation. We get a glimpse of the high-school-aged subject’s report card (mostly Cs and Ds) and a thorough sense of the tomboyish rebel who found her way to San Francisco’s burgeoning Haight-Ashbury scene.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)

The Great Cate (Blanchett) earned two Oscar nominations for playing the Virgin Queen in two separate films, 1998’s Elizabeth and this one—a feat never achieved by any another female actor. But geeky statistics aside, we’re crazy about the fire she brings to the role, especially the way Blanchett shows up in royal drag to bark about how “my bitches wear my collars!” Don’t get on her slappy side.
