The best new movies on Netflix in October

Netflix offers a solid slate of modern-day classics in its October lineup, alongside cutting-edge festival fare

Dazed and Confused

If you’re not one of those hard-core film nerds who jet around the world to places like Cannes and Sundance, Netflix is basically your new best friend this month. In October alone, they’ll be offering up the new Christopher Guest mockumentary Mascots (a crowd-pleasing sensation at the Toronto Film Festival), the new Werner Herzog documentary Into the Inferno (fresh from its Telluride world premiere) and even Ava DuVernay’s The 13th, mere days after its world premiere as the opening-night film of the New York Film Festival. Still, as up-to-date as these picks are, we love Netflix’s collection of relatively recent classics—all post-1985—even more. Someone at Netflix has great taste. Here are five essential movies you should have already seen: Don’t tell anyone, just stream them.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

The cast—entirely unknown at the time—of Richard Linklater’s episodic comedy about the last day of school circa 1976 reads in retrospect like a who’s who of hot young actors: Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey (here’s where his "All right, all right, all right" comes from), Renée Zellweger, Milla Jovovich and many others.

Grizzly Man (2005)

For 13 summers, Timothy Treadwell videotaped his gushing effusions over bears in the Alaskan wild, until one killed him and his girlfriend in 2003. It really was the stupidest of stupid pet tricks; as related in Werner Herzog’s gripping assembly of Treadwell’s own footage and new postmortem testimony, the story becomes a fascinating, strangely touching cry in the dark.

Quiz Show (1994)

Based on the real-life 1950s Charles Van Doren scandal, this terrific drama—featuring yeoman work from Ralph Fiennes, John Turturro and especially Paul Scofield—inexplicably bombed at the box office. If you missed it then, for God’s sake, make it a priority now.

Unforgiven (1992)

One of the few Best Picture Oscar winners that actually deserved the honor, this stunning elegy to Clint Eastwood's screen persona, written by David Webb Peoples (Blade RunnerTwelve Monkeys), is guaranteed to twist your heart into a knot.
