Alaska Airlines has announced a rate increase for checked bags beginning next year. Though the fee is relatively minimal, it’s yet another price increase that travelers will have to deal with when flying.

According to the airline’s website, your first checked bag will cost $35. A second checked bag will be $45. This is a $5 increase from the previous checked-bag fee. The $150 fee for each additional checked bag will remain the same as before. These rate increases apply to tickets purchased on or after January 2, 2024.

Rate increases for checked bags and other in-flight amenities are common among all airlines, and this is the second bag fee increase Alaska has implemented in the last few years. Travelers shouldn’t be surprised if other airlines increase bag fees in the near future.

For those who fly Alaska often, the airline offers a few ways to avoid the checked-bag fees. Mileage Plan MVP elite members are exempt from the fees, as are Alaska Airlines Visa Signature and Alaska Airlines Visa Business card holders. Aside from those options, Alaska Airlines passengers will have to pack light in a carry-on to avoid the fees altogether.
