American Airlines just unveiled its bougiest plane yet, with more premium seats than any other U.S. carrier

American Airlines has officially launched a new era of premium long-haul travel, debuting its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER featuring the sophisticated Flagship Suite. Marking the first retrofit of an existing flagship aircraft, the makeover is a shift toward maximizing high-end comfort, offering more premium seats than any other U.S. carrier.

American has ditched its traditional Flagship First cabin entirely, phasing out first class and expanding its lie-flat business class footprint from 60 to 70 suites, each equipped with custom sliding privacy doors, expanded personal storage space and a unique chaise lounge seating position. For travelers seeking ultimate space, special Flagship Suite Preferred seats are available in select rows for an extra charge. The increased business-class footprint also brings a welcome side effect for loyalty program members: significantly better availability for award seat redemptions.

Beyond the premier suite, the retrofitted aircraft houses 44 Premium Economy seats—the largest premium cabin among U.S. airlines—featuring sculpted headrests, adjustable calf and footrests, wireless charging and dedicated storage. Even coach gets an upgrade, with 30 extra-legroom Main Cabin Extra seats and enhanced lighting.

Technology takes center stage across all cabins. Passengers will enjoy 4K seatback screens with Bluetooth audio pairing, access to hundreds of entertainment titles and free gate-to-gate high-speed Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members.

Flagship Suite passengers receive VIP treatment long before takeoff, enjoying priority airport processing, Flagship Lounge access and chef-curated dining. Onboard, luxury reigns with multicourse meals, award-winning wine pairings and premium bedding complete with a mattress pad and cool-touch pillow.

The updated 777-300ER kicked off its commercial debut on the New York (JFK) to Buenos Aires (EZE) route before shifting to service between Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) and London Heathrow. Over the next year, American plans to roll out these cabin upgrades across its entire 20-aircraft fleet of 777-300ERs, targeting major international hubs including Tokyo, São Paulo and Sydney. The entire fleet retrofit is expected to be complete by the end of 2027.
