We'll be livin' it up on top this summer.

You’ll soon be able to see Broadway’s underworld without paying Broadway prices.
A filmed version of the Tony-winning musical Hadestown, featuring its original Broadway leads, is set to hit cinemas this July, bringing the long-running phenomenon to the big screen in a long-awaited “proshot” release. The production, written by Anaïs Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and has become one of the defining Broadway hits of the past decade.

The filmed performance captures a special reunion of the show’s original principal cast, who returned to their roles for a limited engagement in London in 20205, during which three performances of the production were professionally shot by director Brett Sullivan of Steam Motion and Sound. That means audiences will see the original Orpheus and Eurydice, Reeve Carney and Eva Noblezada, as well as Patrick Page, Amber Gray and Tony winner André De Shields.
The West End cast also includes Bella Brown, Madeline Charlemagne and Allie Daniel as the Fates, as well as Lauren Azania, Tiago Dhondt Bamberger, Ryesha Higgs, Waylon Jacobs and Christopher Short.
“We are eager to share this iconic performance of Hadestown, featuring a unique combination of our original Broadway cast and West End company, made for the big screen,” producer Mara Isaacs said in a statement. “A great deal of love and care has gone into capturing the show on film, allowing it to live beyond the stage and reach new audiences around the world for years to come.”
A folk- and jazz-infused retelling of the myths of Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone, the musical intertwines love stories with themes of labor, climate and power. It’s the rare Broadway musical that feels both classical and urgently contemporary, leading to a fiercely loyal fan base since its Broadway premiere in 2019.
The jump to the big screen follows a growing trend of stage-to-screen adaptations, from the recent Merrily We Roll Along to Hamilton. But Hadestown’s cinematic debut feels especially significant given how much of its appeal lies in atmosphere, from the swinging lamps to the onstage band.
No exact theater listings have been announced yet, but the July rollout will be across North America, letting audiences across the continent see Noblezada belt to the gods on that conveyor belt, something that feels truly mythic indeed.
