Get ready to turn those clocks back—Daylight saving time is about to end for the year. On Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 2am local time, most Americans will "fall back" one hour, officially marking the switch to standard time.

Yes, it means you get an extra hour of sleep (a rare gift), but it also means sunsets creep earlier. For some, that’s cozy sweater weather and earlier nights in. For others, it’s the dreaded reminder that winter darkness is coming fast.

This year’s shift lands on November 2, which is one day earlier than last year’s change and the second-earliest possible date on the calendar. Daylight saving time always ends on the first Sunday of November, and this time around, it’s as early as it gets without falling on November 1.

So why do we do this clock shuffle at all? Daylight saving time was designed to make better use of daylight—lighter mornings in the fall and winter, brighter evenings in spring and summer. In March, we "spring forward" and lose an hour, but get longer days. In November, we "fall back" and regain an hour, shifting light to the morning.

Despite years of debate (and plenty of people calling for the whole practice to be scrapped), the twice-yearly clock change is still the law of the land. Love it or hate it, the ritual continuesexcept in a couple states. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time. Arizona's reasoning is that they don't want to add an extra hour of daylight during the hottest months of the year. Hawaii doesn't observe daylight saving time because with its proximity to the equator, daylight hours don't vary as much throughout the year.

Mark your calendar now: daylight saving time begins November 2, 2025, and runs through March 8, 2026, when we jump ahead again. Until then, enjoy that bonus hour—whether you use it for sleep, brunch or one more episode before bed.
