Good news for train lovers: Amtrak is offering 25 percent off its lowest fares, if you book right away. Booking before October 4 means deeply discounted travel on most routes in a coach seat (or on Acela business class) between October 1 and December 15. Just in time to see fall foliage!

Amtrak’s a great way to travel, with easy boarding, power outlets at each seat, free WiFi, lots of legroom, and in most cases: a riveting view out the window. It’s the perfect opportunity to take a day trip and get somewhere fun.

If you book the travel through the flash sale webpage, the discount automatically applies, or you can book elsewhere with the code S25L. Blackout dates do apply: of course, the days flanking Thanksgiving aren’t included in the deal, although the day after does include the discount (blackout dates November 22-23 and November 26-27).

Some routes, or parts of routes, aren’t included. For instance, you can book travel on the fabulously scenic California Zephyr except not for intra-Illinois travel. The same is true for the beloved City of New Orleans train – you can use the discount except for the legs through Illinois (and actually, that’s true of the Southwest Chief train too! What’s up with Illinois?) Check the website for details on which trains are open for the discount – we notice that the Amtrak Vermonter is part of the sale, and right now’s a great time to be foliage watching (check this foliage map, too, to find out when to book leaf-peeper rides in different states).

Want to get a ‘before and after’ perspective? Ride Amtrak now before the $28 million upgrades happen.
