But what does sugarplum taste like?

Forget about pumpkin spice lattes and peppermint mochas—Dunkin' is leaning into the whimsical this holiday season with its brand-new Sugarplum Macchiato and matching frosted snowflake doughnut. The mesmerizing drink has two distinct layers: espresso on top and lavender-hued, sugarplum-flavored milk below.

But what does a sugarplum actually taste like? The syrup used for the drink evokes a fruit medley (blueberry, raspberry, blackberry and plum) with notes of vanilla and a "sweet sugary finish." In fact, the Dunkin' culinary team has been trying to lock in the flavor since 2016, according to a corporate blog post about the new drink. "After several different takes on a Nutcracker-inspired drink, including a version of sugarplum that featured floral flavor notes, the team nailed the Sugarplum Macchiato with frosted berry flavor that guests can find at Dunkin’ today," the post notes.

As an interesting aside, the mesmerizing purple color was influenced by the ombré drink trend of 2019. According to Dunkin', the coloring is plant-based and "represents the fun, whimsical nature of winter, while also embodying the vibrance of the bright berry flavors." As for the doughnut? The royal purple icing is studded with special snowflake sprinkles—no fruity flavor included.

Like the fleeting holiday season, the Sugarplum Macchiato and its doughnut counterpart are only available for a limited time.
