Cooler temps mean more time indoors, which makes it easier for viruses to spread around. This includes COVID-19—yep, it’s still here—and in preparation for a potential wave, the U.S. government is once again offering free COVID tests to help mitigate spread.

Previously, the government shipped out more than 755 million free tests. The program had been suspended, but with COVID hospitalizations in the U.S. on the rise since July, it’s been reinstated.

Four free tests per household are available to order. To get yours, go to Covidtests.gov. If you don’t have internet, you can call 1-800-232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489) to request your tests.

These tests are the same rapid tests that can be taken at home, and should be good until the end of the year.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends you test if you have any COVID-like symptoms, which include a sore throat, runny nose, loss of smell or taste or a fever. Consider testing before going to a large gathering, especially if you’re not up to date on your vaccines. If you’ve come into contact with someone with COVID-19, it is recommended that you test at least five days after contact.

For additional ways to access free testing, visit a HRSA health center, Test to Treat site or ICATT location.
