Everyone knows to expect plenty of delays getting through security at the airport. It’s a guaranteed hassle, but following some basic tips can help make the whole process faster for everyone. And who better to provide those tips than the people who deal with the checkpoints every day? The TSA knows what causes slowdowns, so they’ve shared an updated list of tips to help you get through security faster.

Here are the TSA’s mostly simple steps that keep the security lines moving:
1. When you buy your ticket, enter your full name as it appears on your ID. It doesn’t matter if your friends call you Pookie; if the name on your ticket doesn’t match your ID, you’ve got a problem.
2. Enroll in TSA PreCheck. You’ll save time since you won’t have to remove your shoes, jacket or laptop.
3. Download the free myTSA app. It has info about what you can and can’t bring, flight delays, wait times at checkpoints and more.
4. Wear shoes that are easy to remove and put back on. Laces, zippers and buttons will only slow you down.
5. If you find yourself in a checkpoint line, use that time wisely: empty your pockets, chug your water and make sure you don’t have any other contraband.
6. Place your mobile phone inside your carry-on bag at the checkpoint. Do you know what else goes into those bins? Your face and fingers will thank you.

Here’s what not to do:
1. Do not joke about having an explosive device or claim that you've got a bomb with you.
2. Never put your pet or child through the checkpoint X-ray unit. It’s true, some people have tried this.
3. Never bring your firearm to a security checkpoint. Follow the rules for packing it properly.
4. Never use your mouth as an extra hand. Do you put your ID in your mouth while you check your phone? It’s been touched by the TSA agent and everyone else whose IDs they’ve handled.
5. Never place small items directly onto the X-ray belt. You’re just asking for it to fall between the cracks.
6. Never bring a bottle of water to a security checkpoint. Refillable bottles are encouraged, just make sure they’re empty.
