One West Coast city takes the top spot yet again as mosquito activity expands beyond traditional hotspots.

As summer approaches, a familiar and frustrating hum is filling the air across the United States. According to Orkin’s newly released 2026 Mosquito Cities List, the geographic landscape of mosquito activity has dramatically shifted, transforming what was once a regional nuisance into a widespread nationwide concern.
A decade ago, Atlanta sat firmly atop the list, leading the nation in mosquito pressure for six consecutive years. However, a major geographic shift has occurred. For the sixth year running, Los Angeles has claimed the title of the worst city for mosquitoes in America, followed closely by Chicago and New York. This shows that these pests are no longer just a problem for the humid Southeast; they are thriving in every corner of the country.
The data reveals that mosquito populations are expanding rapidly into unexpected regions. The Midwest, in particular, is experiencing a surge in activity due to changing climate conditions and the expanding range of the invasive yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti). Minneapolis climbed six spots to number 13, while Milwaukee jumped an astonishing 15 spots to rank number 23. The list also welcomed first-time entries like Traverse City, Michigan and Springfield, Illinois, highlighting how the threat is moving into areas not traditionally known for heavy mosquito pressure.
This expansion is more than just an inconvenience for backyard barbecues. Mosquitoes remain the deadliest animals in the world, responsible for over 600,000 annual malaria deaths globally. In the U.S., they pose a rising health risk by spreading West Nile virus, Zika and increasingly common cases of dengue fever.
To combat this growing threat, experts at Orkin recommend the "BITE" prevention method:
