What makes a happy city? The Happy City Index, created by the London-based Institute for Quality of Life, evaluates 200 cities worldwide using 82 indicators across six major categories: governance, environment, economy, mobility, citizen well-being and health. These cities are then ranked and awarded gold, silver and bronze status.

While the U.S. didn’t snag any spots in the top five (that would be Copenhagen, Zurich, Singapore, Aarhus and Antwerp, respectively) or even the top ten, two American cities earned gold, the status given to the top 31 happiest cities in the world.

New York City was named number 17 globally, praised for its dynamic cultural scene and growing investment in sustainable infrastructure. The report lauds NYC as a "hub of innovation" where urban development is increasingly citizen-focused—proof that happiness can coexist with 24/7 hustle.

Also earning gold is Minneapolis, at number 30, thanks to its expansive green spaces, clean air and commitment to health-forward policies. The city has scenic lakes, bike-friendly paths and a culture of civic engagement that’s tough to beat.

Nine U.S. cities landed in the silver tier, including sunny San Diego (34), the political heart of Washington D.C. (43), and underrated wellness haven Salt Lake City (56). Even famously congested Los Angeles made the cut (70) alongside Seattle, Baltimore, San Antonio and Nashville.

Indianapolis, San Jose, Boston, Portland (OR), Orlando, Phoenix and Houston. Each offers something unique—from cultural richness to accessible outdoor living.

The report reminds us that no city is perfect, but some are doing urban life better than others. Happiness, after all, is part policy, part environment—and a whole lot of community spirit. Find the full report here.
