Affordability is likely the number one criterion on most lists when considering a retirement destination. But the place where you choose to spend your golden years should offer much more than cheap rent and amenities. History, charm, outdoor activities, walkability and environment are all important elements. A new study by financial website Insider Monkey reveals that a small Southern town in Mississippi is one of the most affordable and vibrant places to retire in the U.S.

Tupelo is a historic town in the northeast part of Mississippi. It’s best known as the birthplace of Elvis Presley, where he lived until his family moved to Memphis in 1948. The town has become a top spot for retirees due to its overall affordability and wealth of opportunities for recreation and entertainment.

According to Insider Monkey, Tupelo "offers retirees a charming Southern atmosphere, affordable living, and a rich cultural scene, providing a tranquil yet vibrant environment for a fulfilling retirement experience." Opportunities include the scenic Natchez Trace, historic sites, museums, social clubs for seniors, independent businesses and highly-rated restaurants.

More importantly, the cost of living in Tupelo is 25% less than the country’s average and 5% below that of the state. The median home price—$180,000—is on average $207,000 below the national average. Paired with a rich cultural scene and plenty of Southern hospitality Tupelo is definitely worth a look for retirement.
