Southwest Airlines finally has some good news for passengers: free inflight Wi-Fi is officially on the way. Starting October 24, the Dallas-based carrier will scrap its $8-per-flight fee for internet access, rolling out complimentary connectivity across its fleet.

There’s one small catch, however. You’ll need to be a Rapid Rewards loyalty member. Luckily, signing up for the program is free and takes just a few minutes, so it’s an easy hurdle for travelers who don’t already have an account.

Southwest’s move comes as part of a new partnership with T-Mobile, though you don’t need to be a T-Mobile customer to log on once you’re in the air. The carrier joins a growing list of major U.S. airlines including Delta, United and American that are embracing the idea of internet as an essential inflight amenity rather than a paid perk. With this announcement, all six of the largest U.S. airlines have now either launched or pledged complimentary onboard Wi-Fi.

Tony Roach, the airline’s executive vice president and chief customer and brand officer, called the change part of Southwest’s broader plan to “elevate the cabin experience,” hinting at more passenger-friendly upgrades on the horizon. The airline had been testing the waters for months. In August, it ran a week-long trial of free Wi-Fi to ensure its system could handle the increased traffic.

Southwest's $8 flat Wi-Fi fee was a budget-friendly option compared to most competitors, but making it free is welcome news, especially since Southwest has made a few unpopular decisions recently, including ending its long-standing policies of free checked bags and open seating.

So whether you’re booking a quick hop or a cross-country trek, your next Southwest flight will come with free browsing, just make sure you sign up for that Rapid Rewards membership.
