To usher in the new year, McDonald's is unveiling not one, not two, but three new fried chicken sandwiches—all of which will make their big debut on Wednesday, February 24. The trio shares the same upgraded bun (a toasted and buttered potato roll) plus the brand's new and improved white-meat fillet. There are three versions of the sando to choose from: crispy, spicy or deluxe.

"We've heard our customers loud and clear, and we know they're craving more chicken options," says vice president of menu innovation Linda VanGosen in a press release. "We're confident all chicken fans—from traditionalists to spice enthusiasts—will discover a new menu favorite they'll come back for time and time again."

Of course, fast-food enthusiasts know that McDonald's is just the latest to tweak its fried chicken recipe in an effort to compete in the War of Poultry, which was initiated by Popeyes in 2019. Since then, chains like Wendy's and Jack in the Box have gotten in on the action by rolling out updates to their sandwiches. When they're released in February, the new McDonald's handhelds will join the menu as permanent fixtures, alongside classics like the Big Mac and Filet-O-Fish. Take a closer look at the subtle differences between the three menu items and stay tuned for an official taste test in February.

Crispy chicken sandwich

This classic, stripped-down sando spotlights the new white-meat fillet, which promises to be crispy, juicy and tender. It's topped with crinkle-cut pickles and served on a buttered potato roll (also new!).

Spicy chicken sandwich

Like its name suggests, this hot handheld cranks up the heat with spicy pepper sauce. Crinkle-cut pickles add texture and acidity, and the toasted potato roll holds everything together.

Deluxe chicken sandwich

The same fried chicken fillet is maxed out with toppings, including shredded lettuce, Roma tomatoes and a dollop of mayo. It's all perched inside the new toasted potato roll.
