Scoring a campsite inside a national park can feel like winning the lottery, with peak-season availability often nonexistent. That’s exactly why a growing number of savvy campers are looking just beyond park boundaries. According to The Dyrt’s 2026 roundup of the best National Park Neighbors, some of the most memorable stays aren’t inside the parks at all.

Horsethief Campground near Moab, Utah, claims the top spot. Set along the Colorado River, it delivers the red rock scenery people travel across the world to see. You can paddle the river, hit nearby mountain biking trails or hike through desert landscapes that feel straight out of a movie. The real win, though, is the location. Both Arches and Canyonlands national parks are within easy reach, meaning you can explore iconic terrain by day and return to a quieter, more relaxed base camp at night.

In Montana, Big Creek Campground offers a completely different mood. Tucked into dense forest near Glacier National Park, it’s all about cool air, rushing water and wide-open wilderness. The campground sits beside its namesake creek, creating a peaceful soundtrack for your stay. It’s an ideal launch point for tackling Glacier’s famous Going-to-the-Sun Road or heading out on long hikes. Afterward, you can trade crowds for calm, whether that means casting a fishing line or just sitting back and taking in the mountain views.

On the East Coast, Shenandoah River State Park Campground in Virginia rounds out the top three. Rolling hills, shaded trails and river access make it especially appealing for families or anyone looking to unwind. Shenandoah National Park is right next door, offering sweeping vistas and classic hikes, but the campground itself holds plenty of appeal. You can kayak, swim and enjoy an easy evening by the fire.

You don’t have to stay inside a national park to have an unforgettable experience. In many cases, camping nearby gives you more space, easier booking and just as much natural beauty. Find the full list of National Park Neighbors on The Dyrt's website.
