The company’s annual travel trends report reveals where Americans will be traveling in 2027 and why

Thinking about 2027 travel plans already? You're not alone: Plenty of Americans are planning their getaways for next year, and Skyscanner’s new Travel Trends 2027 report reveals where they're going, and why.
The annual report from the comparison travel app combines proprietary search data with a survey of more than 28,000 global travelers, including 2,000 Americans. The results reveal the destinations that are surging in popularity. The survey also reveals why people are traveling, and it turns out they're embracing purpose-driven getaways where personal motivations matter just as much as the destination itself.
This year’s trending destinations range from relaxed domestic escapes to rich international cultural hubs. Leading the pack is Florida’s Vero Beach, which saw an impressive 201.17% increase in searches this past year; the sunny spot is known for its "Old Florida" vibes mixed with upscale coastal amenities.
Tropical getaways like Bimini in the Bahamas (up 149.69%) and Olbia, Italy (+142.55%) also captured traveler interest, alongside cultural powerhouses like Da Nang, Vietnam (+126.80%), Puebla, Mexico (+113.19%), Stockholm, Sweden (+99.17%) and Glasgow, Scotland (+77.29%). Close-to-home escapes like Destin and Daytona Beach in Florida, alongside Amarillo, Texas (+93.23%), round out the top ten. Florida’s strong showing reflects a broader shift toward seamless, low-stress trips that allow travelers to slow down and recharge without traveling far.

Beyond specific locations, the report also reveals seven key motivations are reshaping the travel landscape. Fitness-focused "Gym-cations" are on the rise, with 66% of Americans favoring hotels that offer protein-rich breakfasts and quality exercise facilities. Music fans are pursuing "Sound Bound" trips centered on intimate local venues rather than stadium concerts, while "Merch-tourism" sees 43% of travelers visiting destinations specifically to collect location-exclusive goods. "Grand Odysseys" draw history enthusiasts to ancient architectural wonders and "Together-Do Trips" are replacing traditional solo bachelor or bachelorette parties with combined group celebrations to maximize fun and lower costs. Financial savvy also drives "Currency Chasers" to swap destinations based on favorable exchange rates, while "Signal Severance" encourages travelers to go entirely off-grid to disconnect in order to reconnect with themselves and others.
As Lourdes Losada, Skyscanner’s Director of Americas, puts it, travel in 2027 is moving away from simply checking destinations off a list. Instead, travelers are becoming far more intentional, choosing meaningful experiences tailored to their passions, hobbies and peace of mind.
